Originally aired on ITV up until 2014, 60 Minute Makeover has become a household interior design show, where tired homes are transformed in just 60 minutes. With presenters including Claire Sweeney and Peter Andre, homes are given new fixtures and furniture before their “shocked owners” return home to see what’s been accomplished. The participants on the show are usually nominated by family members or friends, their homes then receive a secret visit from the 60 Minute Makeover team whilst the participant is out. The 60 Minute Makeover team then face a race against the clock to remodel their homes whilst they’re away. The show is accompanied by a stop watch, and it’s crazy to see how much can be accomplished in a small amount of time when a large team works together. At the end of the show, it tells you how much the transformation has cost – although this is exclusive of labour as all the building work is completed by local volunteers.
The two declined, and Home Improvement ended after eight seasons and 203 episodes. Karn guest starred in two episodes of Tim Allen's 2010s ABC/Fox sitcom Last Man Standing in 2013. Thomas has also appeared on Last Man Standing, and has directed episodes of the series.

The new format is presented by Nick Knowles as he follows the DIY SOS team in helping deserving families build their dream home. The fulfillment of each project is made possible through the help of the community’s suppliers, tradespeople and many other community members who enlisted with the DIY SOS team. Grand Designs, one of the UK's longest running home makeover shows, is famed for its unusual and often elaborate architectural homebuilding projects.

Now, these stalwarts of reality TV entertainment are being joined by a fresh crop of programmes all delivering the same outcome – someone moves into a new house or gets their place done up. Fisher, primarily known as a dramatic actress, was well qualified for the co-starring role but was viewed by the studio audience as not being comedic enough, and too serious in her line delivery. The producers tried to work with Fisher on adapting to the situation comedy setting, but shortly after the pilot wrapped post-production, they decided to recast her. Tool Time was conceived as a parody of the PBS home-improvement show This Old House. Tim and Al are caricatures of the two principal cast members of This Old House, host Bob Vila and master carpenter Norm Abram. Al Borland has a beard and always wears plaid shirts when taping an episode, reflecting Norm Abram's appearance on This Old House.
