Sutton was an early member of the Green Grass Cloggers, and today is part of the GGC Asheville Team, who have danced in recent years at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Lake Eden Arts Festival , the Appalachian Stringband Music Festival, and MerleFest. The Green Grass Cloggers were inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Trail Hall of Fame in 2014. Sutton is also a co-founder of the Fiddle Puppets, now known as Footworks, a traditionally based dance team that has toured around the world. Rodney Sutton has traveled across the United States and Canada and throughout the British Isles performing, teaching, and calling dances. Courtney earned the Betty Siegel award for Universal Access & the Arts and served as a member of the City of Raleigh Office of Raleigh Arts Learning Community.

She attended the Leadership Exchange on Arts & Disability Conference for several years and took what she learned to become a staunch advocate for making the arts accessible to folks with disabilities. In her role with PineCone she helped develop and implement a sighted guide program to better serve low and no vision patrons of the arts. The award-winning program continues today and has been replicated by the North Carolina Folks Festival, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, and El Fiesta del Pueblo. She also helped spearhead the implementation of offering assisted listening devices, accessible seating areas to the conference, and quiet spaces at the Wide Open Bluegrass Festival.

She is thrilled to be serving as the Executive Director for Mountain Home Music and looks forward to carrying on the legacy of Joe Shannon and making her father proud. A resident of Buncombe County in Asheville North Carolina, Rodney Sutton is a flatfoot dancer, clogger, and dance caller who has taught and advocated for traditional percussive step dances since the 1970s. One of many several American step dances, flatfooting developed from the intermingling of English, Scottish, and Irish step dances with African American dance styles in Southern Appalachia. Accompanied by old time or bluegrass music, flatfooting and other mountain dances had been a staple of birthdays, holidays, wedding days, and other social gatherings for decades; in his youth, Sutton first attended such community dances where his father would play old time guitar, banjo, and piano. Mentored by North Carolina Heritage Awardee Robert Dotson, Sutton has spent decades bearing, preserving, and passing down mountain dance traditions. In 1972, he joined the Green Grass Cloggers, with whom he has performed, developed workshops, and acted as director and booking coordinator.

The Bluff Mountain Festival has grown to become one of the largest fund raisers for the Madison County Arts Council. In addition to three nights of music, Mountain Music Festival provides myriad outdoor pursuits at ACE Adventure Resort. Fans are welcomed by a sprawling outdoor waterpark on a spring-fed lake, featuring waterslides, ziplines, and trampolines, all within earshot of the Lake Stage. During the day, festivalgoers can engage in additional activities like whitewater rafting, mountain biking, aerial obstacle courses, and much more. This lakeside festival is a must-visit for anyone looking to get away from it all and have a good time. With a lineup featuring big names, local artists, kids’ activities and other attractions, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

After graduating from Watauga High School, she attended Salem College where she earned her degree in Communications with a minor in Not-for-Profit Management. She began volunteering at Merlefest in 1996 and fell in love with the volunteer experience. Her non-profit career and volunteer experience eventually lead her to a full-time career in concert and festival production, artist merchandise management, and more.

Courtney “Booneranged” back to Boone in 2020 to be closer to her father who had been diagnosed is with cancer. He lost his battle in December of 2021 but was proud to know that Courtney would be contributing to the arts in the High Country. She serves on the board of the Watauga Arts Council and serves on the planning committee for the Boonerang Music and Arts Festival, which is sure to become Boone’s signature event. In addition to her role with Mountain Home Music, Courtney serves as the part-time marketing Manager for the Burke Arts Council, where she is planning the inaugural Blue Ridge Ukulele Festival to be held in May 2023.

My goal is to make this transitional period from the MHM that Joe created, to what it might be going forward without him, as seamless as possible. Each of you can play a role in the continued success of JSMHM by attending some of our incredible concerts. Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music celebrated its 25thAnniversary in 2018 by presenting a check in the amount of $1,600 to the Boone Junior Appalachian Musicians program. The ceremony of presenting the “Big Check” was held on January 11th, at the Jones House where JAM classes take place. JSMHM director, Rodney Sutton had the honor of handing over the check to Mark Freed, the Director of the JAM program. Also attending the event were a number of JAM instructors, including Cecil Gurganus, who holds the distinction of having taught at JAM longer than anyone, plus a large number of current JAM students and their parents.

Originally aired on ITV up until 2014, 60 Minute Makeover has become a household interior design show, where tired homes are transformed in just 60 minutes. Graham also spoke about preparing for death, and not just in the financial sense. Here Graham poses an important question to which he provides an excellent answer in his second sentence. He then pivots to explain his answer in Christian terms. Not surprising from the most famous evangelist of our time. Nearing Home is an excellent book for all adult ages. My husband said, “I don’t want to grow old.” He doesn’t want to feel helpless or dependent on someone else for survival, but like Billy Graham said in his book we have every day to prepare for old age. We’re too busy fighting old age, the inevitable, instead of aging gracefully. Graham's honesty gave me compassion for the experience of growing older. It is not easy, and yet generations before us can significantly impact the generations that follow.

Rev Billy Graham is one of the most well known and respected Christian pastors. I am so happy that he chose to write this book about how to live an honorable and useful life as we grow older. There is much useful information for those of any age, but especially those who are starting to feel the restrictions of age. Rev. Graham shows how God used men and women from the Bible when they were in their later years of life, and, of course, how He can still use us today.

It may be superfluous to say, but I am impressed with Graham's close knowledge of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments. He quotes with ease, and his Scriptural references invariably are on point and illuminate what he is trying to say. If a senior knows the Lord, they have a long acquaintanceship with evangelism and Billy Graham.

Nearing Home is a masterfully and candidly written book about living a life of faith, growing older in faith in the Lord, and then at the appointed time heading home to be with him. There are only 10 short chapters to the book but there's so much wisdom and insight that is shared by Dr. Graham in it that the book is a very enjoyable read. And the fact that Dr. Graham "has been there and done that" when it comes to a lot of the types of experiences many of us go through on our way to glory makes the book all the more compelling.

The book becomes more theological in tone as it proceeds, with the final chapter devoted to a depiction of Heaven followed by a call to the reader to come forward and accept Jesus as one's Savior. This mirrors the great evangelist's procedures at his many religious crusades.

I enjoyed reading his words, and being that this is my first Billy Graham book, I am not disappointed. It exceeded my expectations and gently gave me insight into the older generation that at times have befuddled me. We’re all nearing home because death is uncertain and none of us know the day or time when death will knock on our door. Graham spends most of the end of the book evangelizing and talking about having a relationship with Christ; not merely believing in Christ, but living it. Graham's book, written in anticipation of his own death, is itself a example of how to live well with aging. His book offers much insight and advice which appears to come from Graham's life and to be sincerely felt.

If you’re looking for a ground level book that’s approachable, devotional, & practical than Nearing Home would serve you well. "All my life I was taught how to die as a Christian, but no one ever taught me how I ought to live in the years before I die. I recently toured his library and was fascinated and awed at the amazing things that he accomplished in his life. You have to respect a man who is dedicated to his cause and truly tries to live by what he believes! If you’re going to read it make sure you read some of his other works as well. After giving my heart to the Lord Jesus Christ—repenting of my sin and putting my entire life into His hands—I laid down my dreams, along with my bat, and fully embraced God's plan by faith, trusting that He would lead me all the way. Graham also focuses way too much on Heaven in my personal opinion. Heaven is our goal and our true home, which isn't really the narrative of the Bible.

Now in his 90s, he writes, "Growing old has been the greatest surprise of my life. I would have never guessed what God had in store for me, and I know that as I am nearing home, He will not forsake me the last mile of the way." Hailed as "the world's preacher," Billy Graham enjoyed a career that spanned six decades and his ministry of faith touched the hearts and souls of millions. A baseball may be driven into the farthest corner of the largest stadium, but the Word of God travels to the farthest corners of the earth, proclaiming the Good News of salvation. I have remained a baseball fan, not necessarily of one team over another but of the game itself—the teamwork, the strategy, and the challenge of defeating the opponent. To be honest, I've not been impressed with Graham as a writer and this book follows in that mold. It's not bad, but the combination of not being a book relevant for where I am at in life and also some themes that Graham likes to hit on in all of his book regardless of the topic make this a book I didn't enjoy all that much. Filled with thought provoking wisdom from His Word and Billy Graham. I needed the common sense advice and the reminders of Heaven as I am reaching old age. Billy Graham, the famous evangelist, shares nuggets of wisdom about how to finish life well. This is a wonderful book not only for seniors, but for every age.

This book did exactly that, and from a Christian perspective as well. Thank You to Mr Graham for writing this for us younger folk. A challenge of family living is that we not only face our own problems but we must also deal with the trails of those we love. Then sin happened in Paradise, and life has never been the same. Regardless of where you lay your head at night, I hope your thoughts are about nearing home, and I'd like to explore those thoughts with you in the pages ahead.

It was a unique perspective from a man who has lived a unique life and has known a wide variety of people. This was a book that provided a wealth of history and the present that people do not think about - getting old. His discussion on never thinking about getting old whether it was himself or anyone else is how disconnected our society is from those who have limited connection to our aging relatives.

But of course that is not an option; old age is inevitable if we live long enough. And old age definitely has its downsides; it would be dishonest to say otherwise. Join Billy Graham as he reflects upon his life, recounts God's many gifts, and shares the challenges of fading bodily strength while still standing strong in his commitment to finish life well. Reading it reminded me of the many sermons I’ve heard from country evangelist’s sermons filled with anecdotes, Scripture’s woven throughout, and practical application.
